Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

Overly large breasts can cause health and emotional problems. In addition to self-image issues, you may also experience physical pain and discomfort.

The weight of excess breast tissue can impair your normal daily activities.

How long does the breast reduction take to perform?

The procedure takes about three hours under general anesthesia as an outpatient and you will spend about one to two hours in the recovery room.

Are there scars after a breast reduction?

The incisions are made around the areola and continue down from the areola to the breast fold and along the fold. I always try to make the scars as discreet as possible; however some permanent scarring is inevitable.

When can I get back to my exercise routine and work?

Patients should avoid heavy lifting for 3-4 weeks. Moderate exercise such as walking is allowed on the first week. Vigorous exercise such as jogging or aerobics may be resumed at 4 weeks. You will most likely be able to return to work within a few days but you should avoid any strenuous activity at work for at least a couple of weeks.
